Petro Gazz extended its winning streak to seven games in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference with a commanding 25-19, 25-18, 25-9 victory over a struggling Capital1 squad at the Philsports Arena on Tuesday.
The Angels improved to an 8-1 record, securing solo second place behind the undefeated Creamline Cool Smashers—the only team to hand them a loss this tournament.
“Today, everyone gave a good performance. Unlike in our previous games where we struggled at the start, we played well from beginning to end,” said Petro Gazz Koji Tsuzubara.
Petro Gazz shut down any hopes of a Capital1 comeback early in the third set, opening with a dominant 12-3 run fueled by the offensive firepower of Myla Pablo and Brooke Van Sickle. Their relentless attack sealed the sweep in emphatic fashion.
Pablo and Van Sickle once again served as the Angels’ deadly one-two punch, finishing with 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Fil-Hawaiian outside hitter also contributed defensively with nine digs and three receptions.
Setter Djanel Cheng orchestrated the offense masterfully, tallying 13 excellent sets while also scoring five points, including two service aces.
Middle blocker Remy Palma chipped in seven points, MJ Phillips added six, while Aiza Pontillas and Ranya Musa contributed five points apiece.
“Yung momentum na nakukuha namin is part din talaga ng process na kailangan muna talagang trabahuhin bago mo makuha yung resulta na hinihingi sayo,” said team captain Palma.
Petro Gazz will next face Galeries Tower on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, Rizal, before wrapping up its preliminary round schedule against Nxled.
Meanwhile, Heather Guino-o led Capital1 with eight points, but it wasn’t enough as the Solar Spikers suffered their sixth straight loss, dropping to 1-9 at the bottom of the standings.
Des De Guzman contributed six points, but no other Capital1 player managed to score more than three.
The Solar Spikers will conclude their preliminary round next Tuesday against Farm Fresh, also at Philsports.
