Pido Jarencio is ready to wear another hat.
The veteran bench tactician has been officially announced as the new team governor of Terrafirma during the PBA’s pre-Season 50 presser on Wednesday.
“We formally make known that Coach Pido Jarencio will sit as team governor,” said board treasurer Atty. Raymond Zorrilla before reporters.
This now marks a new chapter for the former basketball star, who, after his playing career, became a coach and eventually a team manager.
Currently the chief mentor of University of Santo Tomas, the 61-year-old assumed similar roles during his time with the GlobalPort/NorthPort franchise.
But the Batang Pier’s recent sale to Pureblends triggered a rigodon within the staff, with Erick Arejola, for one, landing at Magnolia as a consultant.
Now, it’s Jarencio heading to a Dyip team that has been in a renaissance after talks of a sale during the tail end of last season ultimately fell through.
Jarencio will be replacing Atty. Bobby Rosales.
He was not able to attend the presser at Shangrila at The Fort, though, as his Growling Tigers would be playing NU in UAAP Season 88 action.
But there should be no conflict with Jarencio taking on a governor role, as PBA rules only prohibit its head coaches from taking other jobs.
It’s the same situation he got into when he returned to UST, the reason why he and Bonnie Tan switched places back in 2023 with NorthPort.
With Terrafirma, Jarencio will be working with familiar faces like Waiyip Chong, who’s now its team manager after being an assistant team manager with the Batang Pier.
There’s also his son, Jaren, being part of the coaching staff, with Jeff Napa serving as lead deputy to debuting head coach Ronald Tubid.
The Dyip will make their season debut on October 10 versus the Blackwater Bossing at the Ynares Center II in Montalban, Rizal.
