The East Asia Super League’s decision to disband Bay Area not only has repercussions on the regional club league but also on the Philippine Basketball Association.
That is why league chairman Ricky Vargas has called for an emergency board meeting to discuss the ramifications of it and how the league will adjust its calendar, according to commissioner Willie Marcial.
“Nagpadala na ang EASL ng formal letter sa atin regarding yung Bay Area,” Marcial told Tiebreaker Times.
“Nagpatawag na si Chairman (Vargas) ng meeting this week.”
The Dragons were supposed to return to Asia’s first pay-for-play league in the Commissioner’s Cup after a runner-up finish last season, raising the team count to 13.
The PBA also adjusted its schedule for Bay Area, opening the 48th season of the league with an import-laden conference instead of the usual Philippine Cup.
Bay Area’s pullout will affect not only the scheduling of the Commissioner’s Cup, which is set to tip-off on October 15, but also the format of the playoffs.
Last Friday, the EASL made the abrupt decision to terminate the contracts of Bay Area’s coaches and players.
