Milka Romero has been incredibly busy lately with her rapidly expanding food business, but her love for sports – especially volleyball – remains unwavering.
As the co-owner of the Capital1 Solar Energy team in the Philippine Volleyball League (PVL), alongside her sister Mandy, Milka has hinted at exciting developments ahead.
The team is determined to bring home its first championship trophy, and she revealed that they plan to strengthen the roster with key additions.
“The team overachieved in the last PVL conference, but winning a championship is still our main goal. We’re doing everything we can to get the best players on board,” said Milka, the daughter of outgoing 1Pacman Representative Mikee Romero.
Despite her growing responsibilities – which include preparing for next year’s midterm elections as the top nominee of her father’s party-list – Milka emphasized that she will stay heavily involved in the team’s build-up. She noted that several PVL stars have expressed interest in joining Capital1.
“We’re really excited about that,” added Mandy. “So watch out for what’s coming.”
Capital1 reached the quarterfinals of the Reinforced Conference in just its second stint, earning attention from volleyball fans by defeating some of the league’s more established teams.
Public service, however, is not new to the 31-year-old part-time model. Having been by her father’s side during his time as Senior Deputy Speaker, she has joined him in delivering aid to the less fortunate in various parts of the country.
Milka’s experience as both a successful entrepreneur and a football (futsal) player has equipped her well for the demanding tasks ahead. Should she secure a seat in Congress next year, Milka said her focus won’t only be on volleyball but on other sports where Filipinos have the potential to excel and bring honor to the country.
Her passion for sports started early, cheering for her father’s team in the now-defunct Philippine Basketball League. She later joined the Ateneo women’s football team in the UAAP, where she excelled and was even named co-captain.
“We watched and enjoyed the games as a family to support my father’s team. Even now in the PVL, we watch together, and sometimes I forget that I’m one of the owners,” Milka shared with a laugh.
Unknown to many, the Solar Spikers recently made a lasting impact on the town of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, where they hosted clinics and played a friendly match against a local team.
“That was such a fulfilling experience,” Milka said, adding that she hopes to host more clinics in different areas. “We need to boost the country’s sports development program. And if all goes well next year, we’ll be able to do clinics in not just volleyball but other sports too.”
Milka, who was honored as one of People Asia’s “Women of Style & Substance 2024,” is determined to make an even bigger impact in Philippine sports with her millennial touch, charm, and drive.
