Matthew Wright downplays Phoenix’s hot start

The Phoenix Fuel Masters are definitely on a roll right now.

The Fuel Masters collected their third win in four games in the 2018 Governors’ Cup, putting out a dominant performance to rout the struggling TNT KaTropa, 112-82, Friday evening at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

It could be said that Calvin Abueva’s arrival to Phoenix has definitely brought wonders to the young franchise. But in their particular victory over the Texters, almost every Fuel Master fielded in contributed as best they could.

Five players scored in double figures, and it was rookie Jason Perkins who led the pack with 22 points. Wright himself had 16 points; Eugene Phelps had 15 and 11; RJ Jazul made 13 points; and Abueva had 12 and 13.

“I think we’re playing really well this time,” said Wright. “Unfortunately we had a long offseason because we didn’t make the playoffs, but I think we used that as motivation to fix things and to push ourselves to get to this level.

“Of course the addition of Calvin definitely helps us out but everyone’s been playing well.

“All of us, even the secondary unit, are stepping up. We feel really confident in our abilities right now,” added the Fil-Canadian.

This 3-1 start is probably Phoenix’s best in the two seasons they have been in the pro league. But for Wright, this is not something to be proud of yet, as he knows that the season-ending conference is still far from done.

“I’d rather go 4-0 but it is what it is right now.

“I’ll take 3-1, this is probably our best start in franchise history but it’s nothing to be proud of, we still have a long way to go,” said Wright, the Fuel Masters’ pick in the special 2016 Gilas Draft.

After Friday, the Fuel Masters will now head into a lengthy break before facing the Meralco Bolts on September 19. Having a long rest might definitely bring rust to the players, so for Wright, they’ll do their best to not let that happen.

“In the meantime, we just gotta comeback with the same kind of metality, take care of our bodies, and take care of our minds, try not to let this break stall us out.”
