Mason Amos played his best game to date in his young UAAP career for Ateneo de Manila University against modern-day rival University of the Philippines – of all teams.
The 19-year-old sweet-shooting forward from Australia delivered 19 points and 10 rebounds while boasting a team-high plus-13 in his 23 minutes and 50 seconds on the floor.
He dropped the most crucial blows in the Blue Eagles’ 99-89 overtime victory over the Fighting Maroons in the packed SM Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.
The 6-foot-7 Amos sank two jumpers, one from short range and one from beyond the arc, which provided Ateneo with the much-needed separation in the extra period.
Speaking about his clutch baskets, Amos said, “I was just trying to get a good look. The shot clock was running down, so the only thing on my mind was trying to get a shot off because it would have been a turnover.”
“We did a great job of staying composed.
“We knew they would make a comeback because they’re a good team, so we remained composed and focused on what we could control. I guess that’s how we got it,” he added.
But he recognizes that this is just the beginning and expects to improve, especially with head coach Tab Baldwin guiding him.
He has a full five years ahead of him at Ateneo.
“Throughout the year, I had to prove myself. I know my defense was terrible at the start of the year. I guess it’s all about improving day by day,” said Amos about his best game yet.
“I still have many years ahead of me, and my development is in the hands of this guy right here, Tab Baldwin.”
