Just when it seemed the Filipinas were slipping further from contention in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, Mallie Ramirez delivered a dramatic late strike to turn the tide.
Ramirez’s stoppage-time goal propelled the Philippines to a memorable 1–0 victory over four-time defending champion Vietnam on Monday at Chonburi Stadium in Thailand, instantly reviving the Filipinas’ semifinal hopes.
The University of Nevada standout tapped in the ball in the 90+4th minute after Vietnam goalkeeper Trần Thị Kim Thanh had initially denied teammate Alessandrea Carpio’s attempt.
Ramirez’s decisive strike, combined with the Filipinas’ resolute performance throughout the match, secured their first three points in Group B following a 2–1 loss to Myanmar last Friday.
The victory shakes up Group B standings. After the second matchday, the Philippines sits third, behind Vietnam only on goal difference—Vietnam’s +6 edges the Philippines’ zero. Myanmar leads the group with six points after a commanding 3–0 win over bottom-placed Malaysia earlier today.
The group stage concludes this Thursday with simultaneous 5 p.m. kickoffs (Manila time): the Philippines faces Malaysia at IPE Chonburi Stadium, while Vietnam clashes with Myanmar at Chonburi Stadium.
