Filipinas punch ticket to World Cup with rout of Uzbekistan

By: Icko de Guzman

Since their exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July 2023, the Filipinas vowed to return to the world stage.

Under the warm Thursday afternoon sun at Gold Coast Stadium, they did just that — completing their comeback in dramatic fashion.

On their third attempt at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, the Philippines delivered a storybook ending, securing a place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the play-off.

With nothing less than a win needed to secure a second consecutive World Cup appearance, Torcaso rolled out a strong starting XI.

Veterans Olivia McDaniel, Angela Beard, Sara Eggesvik, Sofia Wunsch, Carleigh Frilles, Chandler McDaniel, and Katrina Guillou all returned to the lineup after not starting in the loss to Japan. That left Jael Marie Guy as the lone youngster among the experienced core.

The first half was a tight affair, with both sides creating chances.

Zarina Mamatkarimova tested Olivia McDaniel in the 26th minute, while Nilufar Kudratova sent her effort over the crossbar a minute later.

At the other end, Beard had two golden opportunities in the 36th and 38th minutes — first rushing onto a loose back pass only to be denied by Maftuna Jonimqulova, then seeing a point-blank attempt gathered by the Uzbekistan keeper.

The Filipinas came out firing after the break, with Guy orchestrating both goals to seal the result and secure the Philippines’ place among the 32 teams bound for Brazil.

Beard broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, converting a superb volley off Guy’s cross after her earlier misses.

Five minutes later, Jaclyn Sawicki doubled the advantage, rising to meet another precise delivery from Guy on the right flank and powering home a well-taken header.

Philippines head coach Mark Torcaso was left almost speechless after the achievement.

“I’m a little bit lost for words, to be honest. But the one thing I will say is we came here with a very young squad — an average age of 23 or 24,” said Torcaso after the match.

“To have one of our future stars — someone I believe can be a star on the world stage — play so well in a big game like this and help us qualify for the World Cup is a testament to her and her family. But Jael (Guy) is just one of a number of players coming through our program who will be successful for our national team for many years,” he went on.

“I’m extremely proud of every single player, including those who have already experienced playing on the big stage. The girls have been outstanding over the last six weeks, and all the work we’ve put in has led to this moment.”

Guy, who was named Player of the Match, felt over the moon as her contributions proved decisive in the country’s World Cup campaign.

“I mean, it’s kind of a blur,” said Guy. “When you’re in the game, you just want to get towards goal. Going into the second half, we knew we had to score. That was the goal, to win.

“So whenever I got the ball, I just thought: get forward, find teammates in dangerous areas.”

With the win, the Philippines joined hosts Australia, along with Japan, China, and South Korea, in securing their tickets to Brazil. Chinese Taipei and North Korea will contest the remaining berth later today.
