For one last shot at the world stage, the Filipinas aim to craft another storybook ending in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 campaign as they face Uzbekistan for the remaining outright berth to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 on Thursday, March 19, at Gold Coast Stadium.
This marks the Filipinas’ second appearance in a World Cup playoff, following their 2018 defeat to South Korea, where the Koreans secured a 5-0 win to book their place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019.
This time, the Filipinas enter the high-stakes clash determined to bounce back after a 0-7 setback against two-time champions Japan last Sunday, a result that pushed the team into this decisive playoff for the coveted World Cup spot.
Standing in their way is Uzbekistan, which is chasing a historic first-ever World Cup qualification.
The two sides last met in a friendly in Manila that ended in a 2-2 draw, with Chandler McDaniel and Merryl Serrano scoring for the Philippines.
Head coach Mark Torcaso believes the team is ready to rise to the occasion, emphasizing the squad’s resilience heading into this must-win encounter.
“Our players are well equipped to deal with a big match like this, but more importantly, they’re supportive of every single player and staff within our group, so we’re really excited for the match,” said Torcaso. “We know it’s going to be tough. Every game we’ve played in this tournament has been tough.
“We’re ready to compete against the best teams, and we’re embracing the challenge of this tournament. It will be a difficult game, but our players are mentally prepared.”
Carleigh Frilles echoed that mindset, as the Filipinas embrace the pressure—a familiar companion—while standing just one win away from securing a second consecutive World Cup berth.
“We came into this tournament aiming to go as far as we can, with the main goal of qualifying for the World Cup,” said Frilles. “It’s one more game to reach that goal, and we’ll keep doing everything we can.
“I’ve been in situations like this before, and pressure is something we embrace. As Jackie (Sawicki) said before, pressure is a privilege. We’re honored to wear this badge and represent our country. Staying grounded in that gives us focus, to do our best and make our country proud.”
If the Philippines falls short of an outright berth, they will still have one final pathway to the World Cup through the Intercontinental Play-off scheduled later this year.
