La Salle dominates UP, notches 2nd win

Two wins in as many games as the De La Salle Lady Archers continued their winning start in the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament. Similar to their victory against FEU, La Salle dominated the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons to notch a 65-46 win.

Bennette Revillosa led the Lady Archers with 13 points followed by Snow Peñaranda’s 10 markers as La Salle emerged victorious at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Maybe it’s the aircon,”  joked La Salle coach Cholo Villanueva as he witnessed his team outscore UP by 23-6 in the second quarter to set the Green and White on their way to another victory.

“I think it’s adjusting to what the other team is doing,” Villanueva explained. “We want to have a mental edge on the teams so at the start of the game.”

“We feel out the teams on what they’re going to do on defense, what shots are they giving us. So eventually when we figure that out, that’s the time we adjust.”

The Lady Archers enjoyed a 40-21 halftime lead over the Lady Maroons and they showed no signs of complacency.

La Salle maintained their composure in the third quarter and the period was capped off by a Kat Nuñez basket which extended the Lady Archers’ dominance to 55-31 just before the final quadrant.

By the start of the fourth quarter, there were no doubts left as to which team was going to bring home the win. UP failed to mount any sort of run and La Salle ended the game as worthy winners with a final score of 65-46.

La Salle had 17 assists compared to UP’s nine which proved to be a big factor in the Lady Archers’ win. Villanueva shared, “I emphasize on ball movement because basketball is a team game, you need five players to score a point. It’s not an individual game.”

As for UP, Maan Wong and Lourdez Ordoveza led the Lady Maroons with 11 and 10 points respectively.

La Salle (2-0) will next face defending champions National University Lady Bulldogs on. September 18, 8:00AM while UP (0-2) shall go against the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses on September 17, 8:00AM. Both games will be played in Araneta.
