Akari-Rizal eyes first WMPBL crown, looks to sweep Batangas-NZ Bluefire in WMPBL Game 2

Akari-Rizal stands just one win away from ending Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire’s reign.

Fresh off a gritty 92-88 overtime victory in Game 1, the Sparks enter Game 2 of the 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Finals on Sunday with a golden opportunity to capture the franchise’s first championship.

The series opener had all the makings of a classic, as Akari-Rizal watched a double-digit lead disappear before regrouping in overtime. Camille Sambile and Mar Prado came through with the biggest baskets of the extra period to help the Sparks escape with the win.

But Akari-Rizal head coach Derrick Pumaren knows the job is far from finished despite moving within a victory of the title. He stressed the importance of staying focused and avoiding complacency heading into Sunday’s 6 p.m. showdown at the Paco Arena.

“Well, we cannot celebrate yet,” said Pumaren. “We still have to stay focused on the task at hand. We wanna take care of business on Sunday, hindi pwedeng ganun ulit. We just gotta be more poised and be more seasoned with how we handle things.”

Another composed performance could finally deliver Akari-Rizal its breakthrough championship in the tournament backed by Aktive.

Allana Lim, Raiza Palmera-Dy, Janine Pontejos, Sambile, and Prado are eager to finish the job and bring the franchise its first title.

Still, winning Game 1 is one thing; closing out a championship series is another. The Sparks understand they will have to be even sharper against a desperate Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire squad determined to keep its title defense alive.

Despite showing championship resolve by overcoming a double-digit deficit in the opener, the Valkyries now face the daunting challenge of rebounding from a heartbreaking overtime defeat, with their season and title reign hanging in the balance.

Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire cannot afford another slow start if it hopes to extend the series. Much of the Valkyries’ chances will once again rest on the shoulders of reigning Most Valuable Player Afril Bernardino, but the defending champions will also need greater contributions from their supporting cast.

Pringle Fabruada, Snow Peñaranda, and Khate Castillo must provide consistent production to ease the burden on Bernardino if the Valkyries are to keep their bid for a second straight championship alive and force a winner-take-all Game 3.

One team stands on the brink of history, while the other is fighting to keep its dynasty alive, setting the stage for a high-stakes Game 2 with everything on the line.
