The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has named veteran coach Juno Sauler as the new head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Boys, signaling a fresh chapter for the country’s next generation of basketball talent.
With over 30 years of experience spanning youth, high school, collegiate, and professional basketball, Sauler brings a rare blend of expertise and grassroots insight to the role.
Sauler’s coaching resume is studded with championships: five PBA titles as an assistant coach and four UAAP crowns as head coach — three with women’s teams and one with men’s.
Despite years at the top level, he has remained deeply connected to grassroots basketball, advocating for the teaching of fundamental skills over zone defenses in youth competitions.
This philosophy has led him to travel extensively across the Philippines, forging connections that will be invaluable in his new position.
Currently, Sauler serves as an assistant coach for the Magnolia Hotshots in the PBA and the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the UAAP.
He succeeds LA Tenorio, Magnolia’s head coach, who will continue contributing to the Youth program as an adviser.
“The SBP welcomes Coach Juno to the Gilas Pilipinas Youth Men’s team and thanks Coach LA Tenorio for his leadership as head coach,” said SBP President Ricky Vargas. “Coach Juno brings a wealth of experience and nationwide connections that will be critical in building the strongest team possible.”
In his new role, Sauler will work closely with SBP’s Talent Identification and Grassroots Development Program, led by Norman Black, to prepare the team for a busy 2026.
The immediate challenge comes with the SEABA Under-18 Championship, where the top two finishers earn spots in the FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup.
From there, the top four teams at the Asia Cup will qualify for the 2027 FIBA U19 World Cup, setting the stage for a crucial year in the development of Gilas Pilipinas’ rising stars.
