JRU turns to former NCAA MVP Nani Epondulan as new head coach

Jose Rizal University has chosen one of its own to lead the Bombers as their next head coach.

Nani Epondulan has been appointed to take over JRU’s basketball program, beginning with the NCAA Season 100 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Multiple sources closely monitoring the situation confirmed to Tiebreaker Times that Epondulan will serve as the head coach for both the Heavy Bombers and the Light Bombers.

A former NCAA Most Valuable Player, Epondulan earned the prestigious award in NCAA Season 77.

That season, he led the Heavy Bombers to the Finals, where they fell to the San Sebastian Golden Stags in a hard-fought three-game series.

Following his playing career, Epondulan transitioned into coaching, beginning as an assistant at Centro Escolar University in 2016.

He currently serves as the lead assistant for the MPBL’s San Juan Knights and is also part of Randy Alcantara’s coaching staff at Mapúa University.

Now, Epondulan faces the challenge of steering JRU back to prominence. The aim is to end the Heavy Bombers’ eight-year Final Four drought and break their 53-year championship dry spell in the seniors division.

He replaced Louie Gonzalez, who had been the head coach of the Heavy Bombers for the past six years.

During his five-season tenure with the Heavy Bombers, Gonzalez posted a 27-54 win-loss record.
