Just a few months ago, University of the East embarked on a transformative journey in its athletics programs, with a particular focus on women’s volleyball.
The beacon of this transformation was the arrival of seasoned head coach Jerry Yee, a name synonymous with success and strategic brilliance in the volleyball arena.
Yet, the seismic shift within the program wasn’t the only remarkable development. A surge of excitement rippled through the university as the core of the California Precision Academy squad, renowned for its championship conquests in various tournaments, committed to joining the Lady Warriors.
Amid this elite ensemble of emerging talents, one name stood out: Jelai Gajero, an unstoppable force as an outside hitter.
With great anticipation, the Lady Warriors triumphantly marked their return to the V-League stage.
Their formidable performance led to a decisive victory against NAASCU champion Enderun College, a victory that was underpinned by Gajero’s instrumental contributions. Despite some on-court challenges, Gajero’s prowess played a pivotal role in securing the victory.
In candid self-reflection, Gajero shared her thoughts: “Personally, I think I didn’t play that well, compared to what we’re practicing before. Kulang pa po. Nanalo naman po, pero kulang talaga.”
Gajero, hailing from the vibrant city of Naga, acknowledged the collective responsibility of the team in embracing improvement.
She expressed, “And as a team also, I think we can do better pa. I think marami po kaming kulang sa basic stuff gaya ng first ball and then yung service. So, more on mental lapses lang po.”
Her accountability exemplified the unity of purpose that defines the Lady Warriors’ journey.
As the tournament unfolds, Gajero and her fellow rookie-laden Lady Warriors are acutely aware of the spotlight upon them. They recognize that the eyes of the volleyball community are fixed on their every move.
With a maturity that belies her 18 years, Gajero acknowledged, “Sa ‘kin po, we’re really working hard kasi nga po people are expecting high sa amin, especially sa mga previous achievements namin. Personally po mas namomotivate kaya tina-try ko rin pong taasan ‘yung level ng laro ko.”
The path ahead is not without its challenges. The Lady Warriors understand that they will face seasoned opponents, each match demanding a heightened level of performance.
Gajero’s thoughts encapsulated this understanding: “Alam po namin na as the league progresses, yung mga makakalaban po namin is mas magiging competitive, so we really have to prepare not only physically but also mentally.”
