Khy Cepada, Van Bangayan torn between staying at UE or moving on

University of the East’s heart and soul in Khy Cepada and Van Bangayan find themselves at a crossroads in their UAAP careers, with one more year of eligibility remaining.

After playing their final game of the Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament — a 23-25, 19-25, 27-29 defeat to the Ateneo Blue Eagles that sealed a second straight winless campaign — the duo admitted that a major decision looms, one that they intend to weigh carefully.

“Sa akin po, may isa pa rin po. Pero as of now po, tinitimbang ko pa yung pros and cons po kung ano pong mangyayari sa decision ko if ever,” said Cepada after their final game of the season.

“May isa pa rin po ako, pero it’s gonna be a big decision for me kung babalik pa po o hindi. Pero gusto kong makita yung mga bata na mag-grow and yun man lang, mag-grow sa larangan ng UAAP and yung seniors din, hopefully, kami, bumalik kami,” shared Bangayan.

Cepada and Bangayan carried much of UE’s offensive load over the past two seasons, but their efforts were not enough to translate into wins despite several competitive outings.

While nothing has been finalized, Cepada is leaning toward returning to UE for her final playing year rather than turning professional.

“Sa akin po, more of to stay talaga. Kasi, gusto kong matapos muna yung academic studies. Yun talaga yung pinakamatimbang para sa akin,” she shared.

Bangayan, meanwhile, is not considering a professional route at the moment, instead choosing between completing her master’s studies at UE or stepping away from volleyball altogether.

“Ako po, gusto ko pong matapos ‘yung masteral ko kasi I’m taking it right now. Wala talaga akong balak mag pro. Yun po ang plano po,” said the Lady Warriors captain.
