University of Santo Tomas and National University Nazareth School continued to dominate the boys’ and girls’ divisions, respectively, with scintillating wins at the conclusion of Round 5 of the UAAP Season 88 High School Chess Tournament on Sunday at the Adamson Gym.
After taking a Round 4 bye, the España-based squad returned in Round 5 in vintage form, delivering a commanding 4-0 sweep of De La Salle Zobel.
Jude Dableo (2/2) (Board 3) and Sumer Oncita (2/2) (Board 4) set the tone for the Junior Male Woodpushers, remaining perfect with their second win in as many matches.
Meanwhile, the Jhocson-based squad flexed its might with a 3-1 Round 4 win and a 3.5-0.5 Round 5 triumph over Ateneo High School and UST, respectively.
Sarah Dalagan (4/4) remained undefeated with four wins in four matches, providing NUNS with stability on the top board. Arena FIDE Master Yaneah Morada (3/3) also sustained her flawless form with back-to-back wins in Rounds 4 and 5.
Far Eastern University-Diliman also earned back-to-back victories, sweeping La Salle-Zobel 4-0 in Round 4 before posting a 3.5-0.5 win over Ateneo in Round 5.
Woman FIDE Master Ruelle Canino (3/4) bounced back from a stinging opening day loss with three straight wins, while Lyn Getubig (2.5/3) preserved her unblemished run with a Round 5 victory.
Earlier in the day, UST registered a superb 4-0 shutout of Adamson University to remain in third place as the season approached its halfway mark.
Adamson, in turn, vented its ire on La Salle with a 4-0 sweep of their own, keeping itself in contention for a podium finish.
In the other boys’ division matches, FEU-D posted a pair of victories against La Salle (3.5-0.5) and Adamson (3-1), trailing closely behind UST for the top spot.
Gladimir Romero (2/3) and Lance Orlina (2.5/3) both completed two undefeated rounds to lead the Baby Tamaraws’ charge.
Ateneo also recorded a stellar 3-1 win over Adamson before taking a Round 5 bye.
The postponed opening matches, originally scheduled for September 27, will be played on Wednesday, October 8.
