Islay Bomogao became the second Filipino muaythai fighter to capture the world title in the IFMA World Muaythai Championships, held in the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand on Friday.
Hailing from Benguet and a gold medalist at the Hanoi SEA Games, Bomogao showcased her unwavering strength, guts, and endurance as she faced off against Camilla Danielsson of Sweden in the Women’s Elite -45 kg class.
The intense battle culminated in a nail-biting decision, with Bomogao emerging victorious, claiming the gold medal with a score of 10-9.
Muaythai Association of the Philippines secretary-general Pearl Managuelod expressed her pride, saying, “I have no words to describe how proud I am of all your accomplishments. You truly embody the modern Filipina – intelligent, brave, beautiful, and compassionate. Thank you for bringing honor to our nation.”
Bomogao’s journey to the world title was not without its hurdles.
She had previously settled for a silver medal in the Women’s Elite Wai Kru category, narrowly missing out on the top spot in a hard-fought final against a skilled Thai opponent.
Nevertheless, her silver medal served as a testament to her tenacity and skill.
Joining the esteemed ranks of Phillip Delarmino, the Filipino athlete who secured gold in the 2021 edition of the IFMA Worlds, Bomogao became the first female and second Filipino to claim a world title in the IFMA World Muaythai Championships.
The successes didn’t end there for the Philippine team.
Johnden Aldana earned a silver medal in the Men’s Elite Wai Kru category.
Rhichein Yosorez and Kylie Mallari also took gold in the under-23 Female Mai Muay Category.
