Glen Yang set for Hong Kong debut in FIBA Asia Cup qualis

Glen Yang can finally see action for Hong Kong on the international stage after being called up for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers.

The heady floor general has been named part of its 12-man lineup for the third window next week, as announced by the Basketball Association of Hong Kong, China through their official social media channels Thursday.

He will be joining veterans Duncan Reid, Oliver Xu, Adam Xu, and Leung Shiu Wah plus young big man Pok Yuet Yeung as they all try to help HK earn its breakthrough of the Qualifiers after going 0-4 in the first two windows.

Yang is expected to make his national team debut on February 20 against the 3-1 New Zealand on their own home floor at the Tsuen Wan Stadium.

It sure is a tough task potentially playing against a highly-ranked team for a first game but the 28-year-old is surely excited with the opportunity.

Raised in Canada, Yang has hinted at the development just last December after sorting out his passport issues in Hong Kong — the reason why he had to stay and miss Eastern’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup game versus Rain or Shine.

The guest team lost but rebounded in their next outing with their lead guard in tow, who was filled with gratitude upon coming back to Manila as he fixed what was needed with some help from league commissioner Willie Marcial.

And along the way, that ignited the plans of him representing the country where his father hails from — and where he’s spent much of his pro career.

“I won’t confirm anything, but you know, it might be coming sooner than later,Yang was quoted as saying in an interview.

Two months later and it has come into fruition, at last, giving Hong Kong a major shot in the arm as it now has a dependable PG to run the one.

Adored by Filipino fans from his stints in the PBA, Yang has also given himself a chance to play against Gilas although he may have to wait as HK had already played the Philippine team twice in the present Asia Cup Qualifiers.

“Hopefully I can suit up against Gilas one day, representing Hong Kong,” the Mount Royal University product said.
