One of the pillars of Gilas Pilipinas, Gabe Norwood has influenced plenty of young ballers, but perhaps his biggest impact has been on his first cousin, volleyball player Alohi Robins-Hardy.
Robins-Hardy, the 6-foot-2 setter who recently committed to being a part of the Philippine Women’s National Volleyball Team training pool, cited seeing Norwood represent the Philippines with the Men’s National Basketball Team as one of the biggest factors that pushed her to don the Philippines’ colors, as well.
Norwood, who watched Robins-Hardy’s UVC trump Foton in the 2019 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix Tuesday evening, said he was humbled to have influenced Robins-Hardy’s decision.
“It’s humbling, you know. It’s why you play, it’s why you represent the country to bring and joy to your family, and ultimately to the entire country,” said the Rain or Shine Elasto Painter.
“But to know that I had some type of impact in her wanting to be here, wanting to represent the country is pretty humbling to me. I’m proud of her and hope she continues to carry things on well for the game of volleyball in the country.”
Norwood expressed full support for whatever his younger cousin decides.
“We had little conversations outside of… family dinner… We don’t usually talk about sports too much, to be honest. It’s kind of our break away from our games; just being able to sit down have family time. So, anything she needs, I’ll always extend my hand,” he said.
“If she needs me, I’m here, but at the same time, I’m try’na let her grow. This is her second job out of college. She’s gonna have some growing pains but I’m excited. I’m here for her always.”
