KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Philippine Men’s National Team standouts Sandro Reyes and Amani Aguinaldo cherished their unforgettable experience with the ASEAN All-Stars, who stunned English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United with a remarkable 1-0 victory in front of 72,500 fans at Bukit Jalil Stadium here.
The winning goal came in the 71st minute from Myanmar striker Maung Maung Lwin, capping off a historic triumph for the regional team comprised of players from all 11 ASEAN Football Federation nations.
Reyes and Aguinaldo, both key contributors for the Southeast Asian squad, played pivotal roles in the upset and expressed immense pride in representing the Philippines on such a grand stage.
“I was just focused on the game—because if you’re not, especially against Manchester United, you can get exposed fast,” said Reyes, who plays for German club FC Gütersloh. “But as the match wore on, they looked like they were struggling with the heat. We started enjoying the game, growing in confidence. By the end, it felt like we could really win.”
Aguinaldo, a regular starter for Thai club Rayong FC, echoed that sentiment. “I feel incredibly lucky and grateful. This is for all the Filipinos—players, fans, and everyone supporting football in the Philippines. It still hasn’t sunk in yet. What an amazing experience.”
Despite having only two days to prepare, the ASEAN All-Stars held their ground in the first half, with both Filipinos showing composure and resilience against world-class opposition—while even carving out chances of their own.
Aguinaldo created the first real opportunity of the match in the 17th minute and was a constant presence, even challenging England international Harry Maguire on the defensive end. “I didn’t think about the fact it was Manchester United. I just focused on playing my best,” he said.
“I’m not gonna lie, it was tough,” admitted Reyes, who nearly scored past Andre Onana midway through the opening half. “Our expectations weren’t high going in, but once the whistle blew, it was just football. We showed our quality.”
Both players hope this landmark experience will inspire the next generation of Filipino footballers.
“Don’t give up on your dreams,” said Reyes. “I’m going to keep dreaming big too. If you put your mind to it, anything is possible.”
Reyes and Aguinaldo will now return to the Philippine Men’s National Team as they gear up for a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Tajikistan on June 10 at New Clark City Stadium.
