The Philippine Women’s National Football Team is ready to take on Australia’s formidable Matildas, and the Filipinas aren’t letting the scorching southwestern Australian sun or gusty winds slow them down.
After days of adjusting to the conditions on the sunny coast — conditions similar to their training grounds back home in Balesin Island and the SM Sky Pitch — the Filipinas feel confident and energized ahead of their 5:00 PM opener in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026.
“The weather’s been good. The girls have been adjusting well,” said coach Mark Torcaso on Saturday during a pre-match press conference at Optus Perth Stadium in Burswood.
This match marks the Philippines’ second encounter with the Matildas, following their clash during the 2023 Olympic Qualifiers, where Australia ran out 8-0 winners.
Thanks to the support of the Philippine Football Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission, the Filipinas are determined to show growth and resilience on the continental stage.
Australia, led by skipper Sam Kerr, is kicking off its first major competitive campaign since the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
Coach Joe Montemurro, who took over the Matildas in June 2025, acknowledged the challenge of finalizing his roster against the Filipinas.
“We are excited to get to the pitch. To be honest, it’s a different journey to get here,” Montemurro said.
The Matildas boast world-class stars, including Kerr, Caitlin Foord, and Mary Fowler. Yet the Filipinas enter the match riding high on momentum, fresh off a gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games last December.
Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel anchors the defense, with stalwarts Hali Long and Angela Beard providing experience and stability.
Returning stars Katrina Guilliou and Carleigh Frilles add depth and attacking options, making the Filipinas a squad to watch.
Meanwhile, the Matildas are integrating returnees like Holly McNamara, Michelle Heyman, and Alex Chidiac with eight newcomers, including goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln, who steps in after Teagan Micah suffered a concussion.
As the Filipinas step onto the pitch against one of Asia-Pacific’s strongest teams, their focus is clear: defy expectations, showcase their progress, and make the nation proud.
