The Philippine Basketball Association is further ramping up its efforts in a bid to lure in more fans for its 50th-anniversary games on April 9.
Commissioner Willie Marcial announced on Sunday that the league is giving free admission to fans born in 1975- the year in which the league was founded.
All that’s needed is a valid ID for proof to be able to watch the Philippine Cup doubleheader, which features a tussle between Magnolia and Converge at 5 p.m. and then a meeting between San Miguel and Meralco at 7:30 p.m.
The Beermen-Bolts tiff serves as the main attraction of what’s planned to be a retro-inspired night, with both teams set to don throwback uniforms to pay homage to two of the most storied clubs in Philippine basketball.
SMB, for one, is the only remaining pioneering team in the league- one of the nine entities that left the now-defunct MICAA to form the PBA in 1975
Meralco, on the other hand, only joined Asia’s first pro league in 2010 but was a former participant of the MICAA during the pre-PBA years.
That match also marks the first time that the two teams will meet in the all-Filipino tilt since Meralco stunned San Miguel in six games last year to win its first-ever PBA championship behind a clutch jumper by Chris Newsome.
This latest marketing move is in addition to the league’s lowering its ticket prices in certain sections of the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on April 9.
Fans can avail seats at the lower box for only P50, and P30 for the general admission section in commemoration of its golden anniversary.
