Lately, writing on sneakers has become a trend among basketball players. And on Wednesday, as the Magnolia Hotshots faced the NorthPort Batang Pier in the 2018 Governors’ Cup, Paul Lee jumped on the bandwagon.
He wrote his on tape and put it on the heel part of his Nike Kobe IX EMs. But instead of putting names or phrases like most players do, the 29-year-old wrote ’10/?/18′, which appears to be a date – but an incomplete one.
So what’s the meaning behind it?
His wife Rubie might give birth to their first baby anytime this month of October.
“Ah that’s the question mark, so kaya yung date naka-question mark.
“Basta it’s just a motivation lang for me na, alam mo yun, parang nire-remind ko yung sarili ko na any time, lalabas na yung baby ko,” Lee explained.
Soon-to-be dads usually feel tense whenever they reach this point in life, but Lee played through it. He even had 13 points and five rebounds to help his Hotshots collect their third win in a row with a 113-95 wire-to-wire victory.
The win also improved Magnolia’s record to 5-1, tying them with sister team and reigning two-time Governors’ Cup champions Barangay Ginebra San Miguel at the top spot of the team standings.
Still, the seven-year pro knows that he has to brace for the birth of his wife.
“Kailangan lang ready ako kasi any time talaga so ‘di natin alam. Malay mo may laro kami or what.”
