Denice Zamboanga is taking the unexpected in stride as she prepares for her next assignment this weekend.
“The Menace” battles Noelle Grandjean in a women’s atomweight MMA duel at ONE 167, broadcasting live from the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday, June 8.
It’s worth noting that the Filipina heroine was supposed to challenge Stamp Fairtex for the divisional crown at the aforementioned event. Unfortunately, the Thai megastar had to withdraw from the marquee matchup due to a torn meniscus.
In the wake of this unforeseen incident, Zamboanga accepted a short-notice bout against Grandjean.
Both mixed martial artists once worked together as teammates at the Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya, Thailand, an experience that Grandjean feels gives her a unique edge.
This abrupt change could have rattled many fighters, but not Zamboanga.
For her, this upcoming encounter is a must-win scenario to keep her World Title hopes alive.
“I’m incredibly motivated. This is my chance to prove that I’m ready for a title shot, regardless of the opponent,” she said.
“Every fight is a step towards my ultimate goal, and I’m determined to show that I deserve to be in contention for the belt.”
Taking on an opponent, who knows her strengths and weaknesses, is undeniably a risky move. However, it’s precisely the kind of challenge that fuels Zamboanga’s determination to deliver an outstanding performance.
“My motivation is higher than ever, and I’m ready to give it my all in the cage,” she declared.
Switching from gearing up for a lethal striker such as Stamp to a high-pressure grappler like Grandjean has undoubtedly presented some obstacles in Zamboanga’s training camp.
Despite this, the 27-year-old remains confident in her ability to adapt and conquer.
“The shift in preparation has been significant. Training for Stamp meant focusing heavily on striking and Muay Thai techniques. With Noelle, I’ve had to adjust my game plan to focus more on grappling and takedown defense,” she shared.
“It’s a different challenge, but I’m confident in my training and my ability to adapt.”
Regardless of whether there is an intricately crafted belt on the line, Zamboanga feels that the three-round clash opposite Grandjean is another chance to prove she belongs at the upper echelon of her weight class.
“It’s definitely challenging to face a different opponent so close to the fight, but I’m focused and ready. My mentality is to adapt and overcome,” she stated.
“Every fight is an opportunity to show my skills and resilience, regardless of who is standing across from me.”
