Scottie Thompson rushed to the hospital right after Barangay Ginebra’s streak-saving win against Blackwater in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night.
Head coach Tim Cone disclosed that the former league MVP went straight to his car after the final buzzer rang on their nail-biting 101-99 victory at the Philsports Arena in Pasig to be by the side of his wife Jinky, who went into labor.
“He told me just now, his wife is delivering, as we speak,” the champion mentor said during the postgame presser. “So he’s not gonna be in the dugout.
“He literally was from there,” he added while pointing to the direction of one of the venue’s exits, “he left and went to his car. He’s on his way to the hospital.”
It was actually Thompson who delivered the game-winning assist to Japeth Aguilar for a baseline jumper just before time expired, leading to the crowd darlings’ third straight win of the season-ending conference.
He went on to finish with 18 points and 10 assists to help the Barangay net its fifth win in seven games, pulling them closer to a quarterfinal berth.
According to Cone, the 31-year-old only learned about the situation after the match. He then chose not to join his team in their dugout, as he immediately left to go to the Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa.
“We didn’t know until the end of the game,” he said. “It was nice of his wife not to insist on telling him to come right away.
“They told him right after the game was over, and that’s when he found out, right after the game was over.”
The Thompsons are now expecting their third child.
