Eight years after retiring, Danny Ildefonso will be playing in the Philippine Basketball Association once again.
Converge has activated the 46-year-old big man for the rest of the 2023 PBA Governors’ Cup.
Ildefonso will still remain as an assistant coach to the FiberXers.
FiberXers head coach Aldin Ayo confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times.
“We just want to complete our 15 locals and one import lineup,” said Ayo as Ildefonso will be his 15th man.
Ildefonso was the first overall pick in the 1998 PBA Rookie Draft.
He spent his first 15 years with San Miguel Beer, leading the squad to seven championships and winning the MVP honors in 2000 and 2001.
The 6-foot-6 native of Urdaneta, Pangasinan brought excitement to the league during his heyday with his thunderous jams and patented ‘raise-the-roof’ celebrations, earning him the name ‘Demolition Man.’
He would then move to Meralco in 2013, spending his time there until his retirement in 2015.
In 2017, he transitioned to coaching, moving to Alaska.
Besides his work with Converge, he is also an assistant with National University.
His two sons Shaun and Dave are currently playing pro basketball as well with the former with Rain or Shine and the latter with Suwon KT.
Asked if he is going to play Ildefonso, Ayo only quipped: “Baka.”
