PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa disclosed that the pronouncement made by Bountry Agro Ventures, Inc. president Ronald Mascariñas last July about funding a full-time national team has been found offensive by some team owners.
“There were some quarters I think who got offended,” admitted the commissioner on Thursday night after Gilas Pilipinas’ practice in Pasig City, following the BAVI prexy’s apology to the pro league regarding his pitch made last month.
“Because it came around that they wanted to show that… You know, they’re capable.”
Though done in good faith, it irked some of the ballclub owners. But Narvasa, after talking to Mascariñas in a meeting on Thursday afternoon, understands where BAVI is coming from and that the company just wants to help the program.
“Misinterpreted lang naman,” said the commish.
“That was fine. I think it was just in the delivery. Now, everybody understands that it’s just the eagerness to be able to help, and that is always welcome. It’s always welcome.”
Now that the rough edges have been smoothed, Narvasa assured that he will lend his helping hand to Chooks whenever needed, all for the progress of the country’s basketball program as they all aim for the 2020 Olympics.
“They’re asking for guidance, and I told them, of course I’ll be willing to help, especially if you want to help the basketball of the country, of course I’ll be willing to help,” said Narvasa, the league’s commissioner since 2015.
“And it’s always good to be that way.
