Jovelyn Gonzaga will now focus on the sport where she started — beach volleyball.
The 29-year-old Ilongga has formally pulled out of the women’s indoor team pool. The Philippine National Volleyball Federation is now looking for a replacement.
Instead, Gonzaga returns to the national beach volleyball program — a program she was part of during the build-up to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Welcoming her to the team is PNVF beach volleyball program director Charo Soriano.
“A legend takes on the beach.
“Honoring your indoor volleyball journey and at the same time excited for your beach volley path. We’re here for you, Jov,” said Soriano.
Women’s beach volleyball head coach Paul John Doloiras played a huge role in getting Gonzaga to commit to the program.
“Jovelyn Gonzaga is one of the best beach volleyball players in the country,” the youthful mentor said.
Tributes for Gonzaga poured out on social media after her decision to retire from the indoor team.
The 5-foot-8 opposite hitter was the captain of the national team back in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
“It was an honor to share the court with you, idol,” said national team mainstay Alyssa Valdez.
Gonzaga will join the likes of Sisi Rondina (Creamline), Bernadeth Pons (Creamline), Dij Rodriguez (Creamline), and Dzi Gervacio (Creamline) in the pool.
The tryouts for the beach volleyball team will be on April 30 at Subic Bay Tennis Court.
Gonzaga will still play in the Premier Volleyball League for the Philippine Army.
