Sean Chambers will use this coming weekend to reflect hard.
The 55-year-old PBA legend is pondering whether to apply for the job of University of Santo Tomas head coach.
Friday afternoon, 2OT’s Carlo Pamintuan reported that Chambers has put out feelers for the post left by Aldin Ayo.
Chambers, on the other hand, shared with Tiebreaker Times that he has simply expressed his intent but has not sent his formal resume to the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics.
“I have expressed interest. As of the moment, I have not sent a letter.”
One reason why Chambers — the Dean of Students for Fern Bacon Middle School in California — is considering the job is one man: his mentor Aric Del Rosario, who passed away last March 25.
“Coach Aric was truly like a father to me,” he expressed.
Chambers and Del Rosario go way back.
From 1991 to 2003, Del Rosario was both the head coach of the Growling Tigers and an assistant coach of Alaska.
During that time, the high-scoring 6-foot-2 dynamo became the resident import of Alaska. And he would watch UST games during the team’s off days.
Chambers is also no stranger to coaching.
In 2012, the six-time PBA champion became a coaching consultant for Alaska.
Besides his role as dean, Chambers is also the head coach of Antelope High’s girls’ basketball team and the director of the JBS girls’ basketball club.
So he will think long and hard until Monday, whether he to throw his name into the UST hat.
“I still need to think about the process. I will make a decision after this weekend whether to apply for the position.”
