Carlos Yulo clinched his fourth consecutive floor exercise gold medal with a stellar performance at the 12th Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships, scoring 14.600 on Saturday at the Jecheon Gymnasium in South Korea.
The Olympic champion carried over the momentum from his top qualifying finish, where he posted a 14.133, to capture his fourth Asian title in the event. He previously ruled the 2022 Doha, 2023 Singapore, and 2024 Tashkent editions.
This time, Yulo showed clear signs of adjusting well to the recent changes in the Code of Points from the FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique). Despite the stricter standards, the 25-year-old still broke into the high 14s, thanks to his clean execution.
He delivered smooth tumbling passes and demonstrated solid control in his balance elements, earning a notable 8.800 execution score.
That margin proved crucial in edging out Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi. Both gymnasts had identical difficulty scores of 5.700, but Karimi’s execution score of 8.600 left him settling for silver with a total of 14.400.
South Korea’s own Moon Geonyoung, who stepped in as a reserve following the withdrawal of the Chinese contingent, delivered a surprise bronze medal performance with a score of 14.033 — outscoring Japan’s Hasegawa Tsuyoshi and Oka Shinnosuke.
Yulo also turned in a respectable seventh-place finish on the rings, scoring 13.233 — just 0.400 shy of his qualifying mark.
China’s Lan Xingyu and Yang Haonan dominated the event, taking gold and silver with 14.933 and 14.233, respectively. Iran’s Siahi Kolankouh Siavash rounded out the podium with a 14.133 for bronze.
Yulo is set to compete in three more apparatus finals on Sunday, beginning with the vault — an event where he is the reigning Olympic champion and 2021 World Champion. Filipino teammate Ivan Cruz will also join him in the final scheduled at 2 p.m. (Philippine time).
Yulo will wrap up his campaign at the Asian Championships with performances on the parallel bars and horizontal bar later that day.
