Capital1 scored its biggest win since joining the Premier Volleyball League (PVL).
After securing only one win last tournament, the Solar Spikers picked up their first win in just their second game in the Reinforced Conference, stunning defending champions Petro Gazz in straight sets, 26-24, 25-20, 25-18, on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena.
Russian import Marina Tushova fired 24 points, 23 of which came from attacks, along with 10 excellent digs and nine excellent receptions as Capital1 tied their victims at the No. 3 spot in Pool B with identical 1-1 records.
Team captain Jorelle Singh contributed nine points, while Des Clemente tallied five kill blocks and four attacks to finish with nine markers as well in the one-hour, 32-minute match.
Second overall pick Leila Cruz added five points and 11 excellent digs as the Solar Spikers secured their second victory in franchise history.
“Masayang masaya ako kasi who would have ever thought na mai-straight [sets] namin. They are always looking at us as a low-level team,” said Capital1 head coach Roger Gorayeb.
“Tapos maka-straight set kami ng more experienced team? Malaking bagay sa amin ‘yun, morale booster sa mga bata ‘yun,” he added.
Capital1 will go up against Cignal on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., hoping to secure their second consecutive win.
On the other hand, reigning All-Filipino Conference MVP Brooke Van Sickle was the lone bright spot for the Angels with 19 points on 16 attacks, two blocks, and one ace, as well as 10 excellent receptions and eight excellent digs.
Cuban import Wilma Salas, who had 15 points in the team’s debut win over ZUS Coffee, was held to just seven points, while Jonah Sabete also had seven markers.
Petro Gazz missed the services of team captain and starting middle blocker Remy Palma.
The Angels will look to rebound when they take on Akari also on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
