The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia has announced the early withdrawal of its delegation from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, following Thailand’s continuing airstrikes along the Thailand-Cambodia border, just one day after the biennial meet formally opened.
In a letter addressed to Dato’ Seri Chaiyapak Siriwat, Chief Executive Officer of the Southeast Asian Games Federation, H.E. Vath Chamroeun, President of NOCC, cited serious safety concerns for athletes and their families back home as the reason for the pullout.
“On behalf of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), I regret to inform you that, due to serious concerns and requests from the families of our athletes to have their relatives return home immediately, NOCC must withdraw all of our delegation and arrange for their prompt return to Cambodia for safety reasons,” Chamroeun wrote.
Chamroeun acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision, noting the hard work and preparation of their athletes.
He also expressed gratitude toward the hosts for their hospitality despite the ongoing conflict.
“This decision was not made lightly. We greatly appreciate the hospitality, warmth, and spirit of sportsmanship extended to our athletes by THASOC and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) throughout their stay. We apologize for any inconvenience this early departure may cause and remain grateful for your understanding and support,” he added.
Cambodia, which hosted the previous edition of the SEA Games, had entered 84 athletes across 12 sports.
Officials are now coordinating with Thai authorities to finalize departure arrangements and necessary formalities.
