Even amid a period of mourning, Bangkok came alive Tuesday night as the 33rd Southeast Asian Games officially opened at the Rajamangala National Stadium, blending solemn respect with the thrill of regional competition.
Thailand, the host nation, presented a ceremony that honored both tradition and the spirit of the Games.
The late Queen Sirikit was given heartfelt tributes throughout the program for her lifelong dedication to sports, with King Rama X in attendance to lend a regal presence.
A stunning drone display featuring 800 drones, set to the music of composer Sarawut Lertpanyanuch, lit up the night sky, while LED visuals and pyrotechnics punctuated performances by local stars Violette Wautier, Twopee, F.HERO, and GOT7’s BAMBAM.
Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul reminded spectators of the deeper significance of the Games, saying, “The SEA Games is not only a major sporting event of Southeast Asia but also a reflection of how nations coexist in today’s world—where intense competition can flourish alongside friendship, mutual respect, and unity.”
A spectacular aquatic show wowed the audience with underwater ballet, jet ski stunts, and flyboard displays, while the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra added a majestic touch to the evening’s program.
For Team Philippines, Alex Eala and Bryan Bagunas proudly carried the national flag, leading a 200-strong delegation amid a total contingent of over 1,600 athletes, coaches, and officials.
All 11 Southeast Asian nations were represented in the parade of athletes, with the loudest cheers reserved for host Thailand.
