The 2018 Governors’ Cup may still be in its early goings, but a test is already looming for Calvin Abueva.
This coming Wednesday, August 29, Abueva and his Phoenix Fuel Masters will face his former team, the Alaska Aces, for the first time in the six years he has been in the PBA.
That match will be a roller-coaster ride of emotions, since Abueva had been the face of the storied Alaska franchise since they drafted him as the second overall pick in 2012.
But for Abueva, he’s not going to get carried away by the upcoming bout, saying that it won’t be all about him.
“Wala naman,” said the 30-year-old forward – who was traded by Alaska last August 7 – after Phoenix’s 132-91 win over the NorthPort Batang Pier, Sunday.
“‘Di naman sa player yan eh, sa coaches ‘yan kung ano dapat nilang gawin.”
The product of the San Sebastian Stags program isn’t thinking much of Alaska, as he’s looking at the bigger picture. What he’s concerned about is Phoenix’s tight schedule this week.
After Alaska, they will have another tough test against the TNT KaTropa on Friday, August 31 – the month of August hasn’t been kind to Phoenix as they have four games in the month alone.
“Actually focus muna kasi itong month na ‘to, four games kami,” said the two-time Mythical First Team member.
“Walang pahinga ‘to, kailangan namin i-focus to hanggang 31.”
