Rey Suerte can finally see his PBA dreams turn into reality.
The Gilas draftee signed a two-year contract with Blackwater ahead of the 2021-22 Governors’ Cup resumption later this week.
He was accompanied by player agent Marvin Espiritu in the contract signing Monday, led by team manager Johnson Martinez.
The 27-year-old was picked second by the Bossing in the special draft in 2019, which also featured Isaac Go, Mike and Matt Nieto, and Allyn Bulanadi.
They were the first members of the national pool targeted for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and Suerte had the opportunity to show that he belongs.
The two-time CESAFI MVP was part of the Gilas crew that played in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers’ second window in Manama, Bahrain.
There, he averaged 6.5 points 2.5 assists, and 2.0 rebounds as he helped the Filipinos to a dominant two-game sweep of Thailand.
Now, he’s about boost Blackwater’s guard rotation that also features former Gilas members Ed Daquioag and Baser Amer.
Suerte is the latest member of the 2019 Gilas draft to sign with their team. Over the weekend, Mike Nieto inked a two-year deal with Rain or Shine.
Meanwhile, also signed by the Bossing is sophomore Richard Escoto.
Picked 14th overall by the franchise also in 2019, the brother of Magnolia forward Russel has also been given a two-year pact.
Escoto has played five games this conference including three starts, and is averaging 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.
