Creamline team captain Alyssa Valdez believes that the Cool Smashers’ unpredictability will be their most potent weapon in their title-retention bid in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference.
“I think that’s what sets our team apart this conference; it’s highly unpredictable,” said Valdez.
The Rebisco-backed squad demonstrated just that as different players stepped up in their 25-18, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21 debut victory over Choco Mucho at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Sunday night.
Creamline, already without Jia De Guzman, was further hampered by the absence of Ced Domingo (due to a dental procedure) and Kyla Atienza (due to an undisclosed injury) against the Flying Titans, with both Tots Carlos and Alyssa Valdez playing limited minutes.
Bernadeth Pons shone the brightest, scoring a game-best 22 points along with 11 excellent digs and seven excellent receptions. Michele Gumabao contributed 20 points with 18 attacks and two aces.
Reigning champions Jeanette Panaga and Risa Sato also stepped up, combining for 11 points, while Ella De Jesus provided 17 excellent digs.
The three-time PVL MVP emphasized that each player who stepped up deserves the spotlight and the additional playing time they received.
“We also don’t know who will be playing because everyone deserves a spot on the team. I think that’s the beauty of the Cool Smashers, and everyone is truly stepping up, whoever coach Sherwin puts in,” said Valdez, who scored four points in the contest.
“So, I believe that’s a good problem for coach Sherwin, and hopefully, it will be our advantage this conference.”
