Batang Gilas falls out of contention

The obstacle just became too tough for Batang Gilas, Thursday morning (Philippine time).

Facing a highly-touted Canadian squad, the Philippines could not get anything going, falling hard in the Round of 16 after receiving a 62-102 beating at the Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario, Argentina.

The Under-17 squad of the country’s youth team will next face Mali in the classification phase of the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup. The game will take place at 3:15am on Friday at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in Santa Fe, Argentina.

A horrid first quarter saw the Philippine shoot blanks from the field, missing all 14 of their field goal attempts.

Though Gerry Abadiano and Kai Sotto tried to lift Batang Gilas in the middle quarters, it was not enough to erase their sluggish opening frame. The lead would go up to as high as 40 points in the contest.

Abadiano had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Batang Gilas while Sotto finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.

Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe led Canada with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

The Scores:

Philippines 62 Abadiano 19, Sotto 16, Cortez 10, Tamayo 7, Lazaro 4, Guadania 3, Andrada 3, Calimag 0, Fortea 0, Chiu 0, Padrigao 0, Pascual 0

Canada 102 – Moncrief 22, Krikke 13, Sakota 10, McNeilly 9, Hylton 9, Hemmings 9, Patterson 8, Barthelemy 7, Houstan 5, Rathanmayes 5, Minnot 4, Bediako 1
