The Philippine women’s national volleyball team lost momentum in the late stages, succumbing to Kazakhstan in a five-set match with scores of 21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-27, and 6-15.
This happened despite the team having an early 2-1 advantage in their opening game at the 22nd Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship last Wednesday.
Former UAAP MVP Bella Belen guided the Filipinas to an initial 2-1 set lead by breaking a 24-all tie in the third set with a powerful cross-court attack. She followed it up with a significant block, securing a 26-24 victory.
However, the Philippines faced a downturn in the fourth set, relinquishing a 24-22 advantage as Sana Anarkulova led Kazakhstan’s comeback, forcing the game into a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Philippines struggled to find their rhythm, falling behind 1-6 at the start of the frame and ultimately missing the opportunity for a victory against Kazakhstan.
Vange Alinsug spearheaded the Filipinas, who began the tournament with a 0-1 record, amassing an impressive 30 points through 28 successful attacks, a block, and an ace.
Belen contributed 20 points with 18 attacks and two blocks, while Alyssa Solomon added 14 points from 10 attacks and four service aces.
Conversely, Tatyana Nikitina scored 27 points for the opposing team, showcasing 23 successful attacks, three aces, and a block. Sana Anarkulova also contributed 20 points.
The Philippines is scheduled to face China later on the same day, Thursday.
