Chris Koon proved to be the missing link for Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday as he made his much-anticipated return to the court.
Koon missed the past two games due to a left ankle injury sustained in their season opener against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.
Tonight, the 6-foot-5 guard was eager to contribute once again.
Following two weeks of rehabilitation and recovery, Koon started against Adamson University and played a pivotal role in the Blue Eagles’ 60-51 victory.
The graduating winger finished the game with eight points and four rebounds, demonstrating his impact on both ends of the floor. He made his presence felt, as he recorded a plus-11 rating in 25 minutes of play.
“It felt great. It’s great to be back with the guys. It felt like forever even though it was only two games,” said Koon.
With Ateneo starting the season with a disheartening 0-3 record – the worst under head coach Tab Baldwin – Koon found it challenging to watch from the sidelines.
During his absence, the Blue Eagles suffered defeats against the UST Growling Tigers and their archrivals De La Salle Green Archers.
“It’s tough. You could say as a leader you could contribute off the court as well, but of course, you want to be on the court to contribute and help the guys,” Koon shared.
His return was particularly significant given the Blue Eagles’ roster of many rookies who need guidance from their seniors familiar with Baldwin’s system.
Koon acknowledged the importance of his leadership, especially with young talents like Kristian Porter, Jared Bahay, Ayodeji Balogun, Waki Espina, and Femi Edu gaining valuable minutes this season.
“We got a lot of young guys as well, so it’s very important for me to be out there just to help our guys. I was glad I was able to be in that role again,” he stated.
