Breaking the PBA’s all-time three-point record would be even more special for Marcio Lassiter if Jimmy Alapag could be there to witness it firsthand.
The San Miguel sniper is dreaming of that moment, especially after moving just three triples away from surpassing the surefire Hall of Famer at no. 1 on the list.
Lassiter hit five threes in San Miguel’s 139-129 victory over the winless Phoenix on Friday night.
“I really gotta get on the phone, probably hit him up today or actually, tomorrow,” Lassiter told reporters moments after the match at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
It’s understandable for Lassiter to want that, having seen a similar scenario play out in the NBA.
Stephen Curry broke the NBA’s career three-point record on December 14, 2021, in the presence of Reggie Miller and Ray Allen, the record-holder at the time.
Miller was on the call for TNT, and Allen was flown in as a guest. Both legends were there to witness Curry hit a total of 11 triples, leading Golden State to a 105-96 win over New York at Madison Square Garden.
Lassiter wants a similar moment with Alapag. What would make it even more special is the presence of fans.
A big crowd is expected to show up on Sunday at the Big Dome, as the 7:30 PM main event will feature a heavyweight clash between San Miguel and Ginebra.
Will we see the icon in Manila?
“I may have to fly him out! It might be an expensive ticket, but we’ll see,” Lassiter quipped, smiling.
Alapag, the 2011 PBA MVP, is currently busy serving as a player development coach for the Sacramento Kings.
“I may have to get him out here. That would be kinda cool. But yeah, first things first, I gotta talk to him,” he added.
“I’ll probably be the one to hit him up.”
