Glory Alonzo, April Minanga, and Jane Marie Sigue maintained their marvelous run in the Asian Universities Women Softball Asia Cup 2024, leading Adamson University-Philippines to a 6-0 shutout of Singapore and 7-0 blanking of South Korea in Thursday’s double-header at the Taichung International Field in Taiwan.
The Lady Falcons’ pitching staff has been unstoppable so far, giving up zero runs in the last four games while only allowing two against Japan in their opening match.
These two victories pushed Adamson to a 4-1 record for joint-second with Japan, which earlier lost to Chinese Taipei in a nine-inning battle, 1-0.
Adamson will close out the elimination round tomorrow against the undefeated Chinese Taipei side at 12:30 p.m. with a possible gold medal match ticket at stake.
While the Philippines’ hitting needed some time to warm up, the duo of Alonzo and Minanga was pure from the get-go against the Singaporeans, giving up just one hit apiece.
Adamson first scored in the top of the fourth inning working with two outs as Reyae Villamin displayed her plate discipline to earn a four-pitch walk while Alaiza Talisik was intentionally walked the next play.
May Mahinay then opened the scoring with a base hit that plated Villamin.
Hits then kept on coming for the Lady Falcons, pouring in a run each in the fifth and sixth frames before finally putting the game out of reach with a three-run seventh care of MJ Maguad and Talisik’s triples, sending home Roma Jane Cruz, Remilie Herrero, and Maguad.
It was Sigue who started for the Philippines against the Koreans while Alonzo closed it out.
With the pitchers steady, Adamson just needed its batters to make contact and they did in the top of the third stanza.
Angelu Gabriel scored Mahinay on a single before Herrero added two more on a double to left center field that brought MJ Libaton and Mae Langga home for a 3-0 lead.
The sluggers of head coach Ana Santiago then converted two insurance runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to dominate South Korea.
