Filipino businessman and lawmaker Mikee Romero has reached another milestone in his illustrious sporting career, earning the No. 6 overall ranking in the United States Polo Rankings for April 2025.
Romero also rose to No. 20 in the overall standings for the January–May 2025 Winter Polo Season, amassing 205 points. He shares this spot with 10-goaler and 2024 U.S. Open Champion Poroto Cambiaso, cementing his place among the top-performing amateur and professional players in the United States.
This latest feat comes shortly after Romero was recognized by the World Polo Tour as the No. 24 amateur polo player in the world — making him the highest-ranked Southeast Asian in the global polo scene.
The April rankings are led by some of the sport’s most dominant 10-goal professionals: Tomas Panelo (No. 1), Juan Martín Nero (No. 2), Adolfo Cambiaso (No. 3), and Barto Castagnola (No. 4). Romero’s placement at No. 6 among such legends highlights the strength of his performance and the consistency of his campaign throughout the U.S. polo season.
‘Niki’ Among America’s Finest Polo Ponies
Romero’s prized polo pony, Niki, also made headlines by tying for the No. 1 polo horse ranking in the United States.
Niki shares this elite status with some of the most celebrated horses in the sport: Catwoman (Juan Martín Nero), La Dolfina Binter and La Dolfina Jetcost (Adolfo Cambiaso), and Oriental Oklahoma (Tomas Panelo).
Each horse earned a perfect 30-point rating — underscoring Niki’s exceptional talent and Romero’s deep connection with his mount.
A Historic Run Through the Gauntlet
Romero’s rise in the rankings was largely fueled by his strong performance in the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo — the most prestigious series in American polo, consisting of the C.V. Whitney Cup, the USPA Gold Cup, and the U.S. Open Polo Championship.
Competing with his GlobalPort Polo Team, Romero made history as part of the first Asia-based team in decades to complete the entire Gauntlet. The team reached the semifinals of the C.V. Whitney Cup and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, going head-to-head with the sport’s elite squads.
“This is a deeply meaningful moment,” Romero shared. “To stand among the best players in the U.S. and to see Niki recognized alongside the finest horses in the world is a tribute to the effort, preparation, and heart that went into every game.”
With these latest accomplishments, Romero continues to establish himself as one of the most respected and influential figures in international polo — both on and off the field.
