Alex Eala eyes third top-10 win as she takes on Paolini in Dubai

For the fifth time in less than a year, Alex Eala will face a player ranked in the top 10 in the world.

After defeating recent WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open semifinalist Hailey Baptiste of the United States in the opening round of the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships on Sunday, Eala will take on the 2024 champion of the same event, Jasmine Paolini of Italy, in second-round action on Tuesday.

As the sixth seed in the tournament, Paolini received a first-round bye.

The 30-year-old Italian is among the elite in both singles, where she is ranked 8th; and doubles, where she sits at No. 4. Paolini’s breakthrough came relatively late in her career.

In 2024, she stunned the field at the Dubai Tennis Championships by winning the title as an unseeded entry.

She followed that first WTA 1000 trophy by reaching the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Later, she captured the doubles gold medal at the Paris Olympics and capped an incredible year by helping Italy win the Billie Jean King Cup, defeating Slovakia in the final.

In 2025, Paolini continued her dominance by claiming both the singles and doubles titles at the WTA 1000 Italian Open.

That year, she and compatriot Sara Errani faced Eala and Coco Gauff in the doubles quarterfinals in Rome, narrowly winning in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

However, Paolini has struggled in 2026. After an opening-round bye at the WTA 1000 Doha Open, she was ousted in the second round by Maria Sakkari of Greece.

Her only other singles appearance this year was at the Australian Open, where she lost in straight sets to rising American teen Iva Jovic in the third round.

It is this slow start and lack of match activity that gives Eala hope.

The Filipina will have more than just a puncher’s chance to pull off an upset when they meet in the final match of the day at Center Court of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.

Paolini is known for taking control of matches, dictating rallies with her relentless attacking style and putting opponents on the defensive.

Eala, however, has the tools to counter Paolini’s aggression.

The world No. 47’s flat backhand and on-the-rise forehand, which return the ball deep into the opponent’s court, can neutralize Paolini’s topspin-heavy forehand.

If Eala complements her groundstrokes with high-bouncing shots and well-timed drop shots — elements that have been missing from her recent game — she could make Paolini run and force her to expend energy across the court.

Eala has a respectable record of two wins and two losses against top-10 players.

She has defeated former world No. 1 and six-time Grand Slam winner Iga Świątek of Poland and 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys of the United States.

She has also lost in three sets to Świątek and American world No. 5 Jessica Pegula. Eala will be aiming to improve her record to 3-2 by adding Paolini to her list of top-ten victories.
