Alex Eala stuns world No. 2 Iga Swiatek to advance to Miami Open semis

Alex Eala delivered the biggest victory of her young career, stunning world No. 2 Iga Swiatek with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old wildcard entry displayed nerves of steel against one of her childhood idols, breaking Swiatek’s serve early and maintaining control throughout the match to secure a spot in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 event.

“I don’t know what to say, I mean, complete just disbelief right now, and I am on cloud nine,” Eala said in her on-court interview, struggling to contain her emotions after the biggest win of her career.

“It’s forever in my heart.”

Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, entered the match under heightened security following an incident with a spectator earlier in the tournament.

However, the Polish star struggled from the outset, committing 19 unforced errors in the opening set and failing to hold serve.

Eala capitalized, striking winners from all angles and dictating the tempo with her aggressive play.

The second set saw Swiatek momentarily regain her footing, taking a 4-2 lead before Eala mounted a resilient comeback.

The Filipina clawed her way back, breaking Swiatek’s serve twice before closing out the match with her eighth break overall.

“I’m so happy and so blessed to be able to compete with such a player on this stage,” Eala said.

The victory marks her third triumph over a Grand Slam champion in this tournament, following wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys.

Eala now awaits the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between fourth seed Jessica Pegula and 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu.
