Alex Eala outduels Cîrstea, books Dubai showdown with Gauff

The last time Alex Eala faced Sorana Cîrstea of Romania, the Filipina tennis ace was just 18 years old and ranked No. 170 in the world.

Then ranked No. 30, Cîrstea leaned on her veteran savvy to grind out a tight three-set victory in the opening round of the 2024 WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open.

On Thursday, in the third round of the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships, a more battle-tested 20-year-old Eala displayed far greater composure against her seasoned foe, carving out a 7-5, 6-4 triumph on a jam-packed Center Court at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.

Coming off an impressive straight-sets win over sixth seed Jasmine Paolini in the previous round, Eala sustained her fine form. She repeatedly dragged Cîrstea into extended rallies — an area where the Romanian has often struggled.

The opening set was tightly contested, with the score knotted at 3-3 after both players exchanged breaks in the third and fourth games.

Eala had a golden opportunity to seize control in the seventh game but squandered a break point with a routine error, allowing Cîrstea to hold serve.

As in her previous match, however, Eala stayed composed while Cîrstea began showing visible frustration with the crowd.

The Filipina eventually secured her second break of the set to move ahead 6-5, then calmly served it out in the 12th game after 54 minutes.

Dropping the first set appeared to sap Cîrstea’s momentum. Eala dictated the rallies in the second frame as the Romanian — fresh off a title run at the WTA 250 Transylvania Open just over a week ago — began to unravel with a flurry of unforced errors.

Eala surged to a 4-0 lead before Cîrstea mounted a brief fightback, winning four of the next five games to close in at 5-4.

But Eala refused to let the match slip, sealing the victory in the 10th game.

Now ranked world No. 47, Eala advances to just the second WTA 1000 quarterfinal of her career.

Awaiting her is another stern test: world No. 4 and two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff of the United States — her former doubles partner.
