Just hours before making their first-ever final appearance, Akari condemned the recent online threats against its players and coaching staff following their controversial victory over PLDT in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference semifinals.
The Chargers have faced intense online backlash, with some individuals even resorting to issuing threats – particularly targeting middle blocker Ezra Madrigal, who was at the center of the controversy last Saturday.
“We, the Akari Chargers, are deeply saddened by the recent threats directed towards our players and coaching staff following our victory in the PVL 2024 Reinforced Conference Semi-finals,” the team’s statement began.
“While we understand the passion and emotions that sports can evoke, there is absolutely no place for threats or intimidation in our sport or in society,” Akari added.
With the High Speed Hitters just one point away from sealing the victory at 14-13, Madrigal brushed her shoulder against the net during a long rally.
That prompted the PLDT coaching staff to call a challenge in the middle of the intense play.
The challenge, however, was deemed unsuccessful as another play was already in motion at the time of Madrigal’s net touch.
The league cited Section 11.3.2 of the FIVB rulebook, which states, “Players may touch the post, ropes, or any other object outside the antennae, including the net itself, provided that it does not interfere with the play.”
PLDT filed a protest, but it was later dismissed by the league.
Akari emphasized that the safety of their players and staff is their utmost priority and assured that they are coordinating with authorities to ensure appropriate measures are taken.
“The safety and well-being of our athletes, coaches, and their families are our top priorities. We are coordinating with the proper authorities and taking immediate action to ensure their protection,” Akari said.
The Chargers will take on Creamline in the winner-take-all finale of the Reinforced Conference later today at 6:00 PM at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Akari is currently on a 10-game winning streak.
“Despite these challenges, we remain resolute. Our team’s commitment and determination have been unwavering throughout our difficult journey to the finals, and we will not be intimidated. We will continue to compete today with the same grit and passion that has defined our season,” the statement read.
“Sports should be a unifying force, bringing us together through shared respect and love for the game. We call on all our fans to embody this spirit, remembering that respect for the game, for our opponents, and for one another is at the heart of volleyball,” the statement continued.
“Thank you to our supporters for standing by us and for your unwavering support.”
