AJ Edu vows: ‘I’ll be back stronger’

Heartbreak

That’s how 19-year-old big man AJ Edu felt after learning that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus hours after Gilas Pilipinas Youth’s game against Greece in the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup.

It cost him what would have been a magical run for the Philippines in the global meet after missing it for the last 40 years.

It might also cost him his sophomore year with the Toledo Rockets.

“Looking up to him for guidance. Sometimes we don’t get why things happen, but it’s all for a reason,” the Filipino-Nigerian wunderkind asked in a statement.

“It’s all part of the journey.”

Just two minutes and two seconds into Gilas’ first game in Herkelion, Greece, Edu went for a rebound and tried to spark a fastbreak attempt.

As he went through the air, his right knee suddenly buckled.

The 6-foot-11 crumpled in pain before being led to the bench. Team staff brought him to a nearby medical facility after the contest.

Given his difficult situation, though, an outpouring of support flooded Edu’s inbox. Well-wishes came his way.

And they kept him stronger.

“I just want to thank everyone for the messages, support, and prayers. The love from everyone has been amazing,” he expressed.

“It’s gonna be a process, but I’ll be back stronger”

But before coming back home, Edu plans to be the biggest cheerleader for Gilas Youth in the World Cup.

“Also please continue to show your awesome support for these guys they ain’t done yet!”
