After being benched by Napa vs Ateneo, Omar John regains his trust vs UP

National University center Omar John finally had the breakout game he needed in the UAAP Season 85 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Gambian big man converted a crucial basket with 1:24 left on the clock against University of the Philippines to extend the Bulldogs’ lead 78-72. And they eventually won, 80-75, to stun the defending champions.

In close to 31 minutes of action, John produced 16 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, three assists, and two steals. And he led NU to its third win this season.

“It’s a good win for us because every day we work really hard,” the 20-year-old big man said. “I want to say thank you to coach Jeff (Napa) for giving me confidence.

“I know the past few games I didn’t do good but it’s time for me to prove I can play basketball or I have to help the team every game.”

John’s performance has been a long time coming. Beforehand, he was not able to make himself the post presence needed by the Bulldogs in terms of defending and attacking the paint.

He was particularly disappointing against Ateneo de Manila University. John only suited up for 9:50 minutes of action during that game. Moreover, he only scored two points and two rebounds, and committed three turnovers vs the Blue Eagles.

“Ito against Ateneo, I did not put him back again because I’m mad at him, because he got too aggressive. He got too relaxed, or whatsoever,” said NU coach Jeff Napa.

“Now he learned his lesson.”

For athletes, there are moments that can make or break their season. John finally had his big chance to shine by scoring that basket.

He won’t rest on his laurels, though, and he looks to build on this moment,

“Maybe it’s a lucky shot, but coach keeps on telling me in practice that he doesn’t care if I miss or if I make the basket – just that I shoot the ball.”
