New-look Lady Eagles cruise in debut against Lady Bombers

Transitioning after another wave of player exoduses, the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles overwhelmed the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15, and started their Women’s Collegiate Conference campaign on the right note at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Eagles sported a commanding height advantage over their NCAA counterparts. Ateneo’s attackers easily went over JRU’s blockers. The shorter Lady Bombers also struggled to get past the Ateneo block. Ateneo led all the way with JRU coming close only on due to the Lady Eagles’ errors.

“We are definirely a rebuilding team and every game we can play together is going to be huge help,” mused Ateneo’s new team captain Bea De Leon, who powered in a team-high 14 points.

“Hopefully, we can keep winning and this becomes the start of us being able to build more confidence,” she added.

Kat Tolentino added 11 points, while Jules Samonte and Maddie Madayag had 10 points each for Ateneo. Of JRU’s 47 total points, 21 came off errors.

Skipper Shola Alvarez and opposite hittee Karen Montojo had nine points apiece for JRU.

The Lady Eagles get thier first big challenge of the conference when they face the Far Eastern University on September 9. The Lady Bombers face the San Sebastian Lady Stags on Wednesday.
