Alex Eala’s winning streak on grass came to a screeching halt on Wednesday at the hands of a familiar foe.
World No. 19 Iva Jovic of the United States once again proved too strong for the Filipina, scoring a dominant straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 16 of the 2026 HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club in London.
Eala and Jovic had faced each other just two weeks ago on the slow red clay courts of Roland Garros. There, the American teen also came out on top in straight sets in their first-round encounter.
The result did not change on a faster surface, as world No. 33 Eala struggled to turn the tide on grass at the Andy Murray Arena.
The unseeded Eala, playing her seventh singles match on grass in a little over a week, tried to match Jovic from the baseline but was consistently overpowered by the American’s heavier groundstrokes.
Jovic made an immediate statement, breaking Eala in the opening game to race to a 2-0 lead.
Although Eala managed to get on the board in the third game, Jovic quickly regained control, winning four of the next five games to close out the first set in 35 minutes.
Jovic was even more dominant in the second set, surging to a 5-1 lead to effectively seal the match.
The contest lasted one hour and 17 minutes, with Jovic completing a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win.
Despite being only in her second singles match on grass, Jovic looked fully at home on the surface, finishing with 26 winners while dropping serve just once.
Both players entered the Round of 16 off straight-sets opening wins.
Eala defeated world No. 64 Zhang Shuai of China, 6-3, 6-2, while Jovic beat world No. 58 Antonia Ružić of Croatia, 6-3, 6-4.
